Modern Warfare 2 - Evasive problem

Okay so I can run modern warfare 2 through steam for hours successfully. Then the very next da (like today) it crashes, not once but every time... like a score in a row thus far.

The problem manifests by locking up the whole computer (as in no ctrl-alt-del, nothing works except power off and on or hard restart). Before it did come with graphical and sound glitches so I swapped out the sound card and I've made sure I've got the latest drivers for both.

Now after that it improved slightly. After uninstalling microsoft security it worked fine... no idea why.

So anyway I was playing yesterday for hours. This morning in response to a friends request I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy. To check it worked I installed it and let it run. I used the whole immunise function. Then tried to run MW2 after having played Mass Effect for a couple of hours successfully. It crashed and kept crashing since.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled, checked the cache integrity. Tried running it through the single player menu (which has worked in the past). Nothing.

I'm pretty much making good use of the reinforced keyboard on this machine but I'm getting no where fast.

    Help?

First the good news - you are not alone with this issue.

Now for the bad news - there is no definitive answer to this question.

See this thread for some ideas:

COD:MW2 , cod4 freeze bug strikes back!!! - techPowerUp! Forums

The general consensus is an underlying (undetermined issue with a persons rig) rather than the game itself. Your mileage may vary.

On my 775 socket PC, I had freezing issues that sporadically occurred from minutes into the game right up to hours before it hard froze.

I haven't really tried it with my new build, so I'm still unsure what the issue was / is. Hopefully you will have better luck

    Errm... arse?

This IS a new build computer... the last one was a 775 and that started crashing... mind you it was also losing the internet totally so I'm still happy I invested in a new rig (aside from the speed & geeking benefits ).

I'll go check that thread out as I have a nasty idea that it's related to computer security...

New builds don't automatically mean magic fixes.

I merely linked to that thread to show that there were many different inconclusive reasons why that game hard freezes.

If you think it's security related - exhaust that option. If not - look elsewhere.

As a last resort, may I suggest looking up your arse?

Lol. Well that's where most people seem to think IT solutions come from so yeah it could be worth a look

    Probable fix.

I reinstalled and avoided all security programs except windows defender, pc matic and kaspersky 2010 which I was running before and it didn't cause a problem (don't ask why I changed, it's force of habit).

Now I've done this, MW2 works perfectly for like a couple of weeks now.
