Jedi Knight (Dark Forces 2) on Win7x64

Alright guys...I went legit, no hacking/cracking/dling. I bought the Jedi Knight pack through Steam for some awesome retro gaming fun. Only, it's not so fun...EVERYTHING installed, video played, nice and easy, until you get to the actual in-game experience.

    Then you get this:

Ew. Believe me, I went through every possible configuration in the in-game menu for Display. The ONLY thing that made it stop was disabling 3D acceleration...which caused everything to be shaded by either red, green, white, or pink pixels. I'll s/n that if that description was confusing.

Through ATI CCC I disabled, then enabled, then tried a mix of, the 3d settings, such as anti-aliasing, vertical sync, etc. While running the game I Alt+Tabbed over to CCC and the center was adjusting settings each time I tabbed out of the game, so I presume that the game caused a change in setting no matter what I set through CCC.

I also tried running compatibility modes, but since this is done through steam it either A) tries to change steam.exe to compatibility mode, which Steam won't do, or B) causes steam, which launches with it, to crash when I compat the JK.exe to compatability mode within Steam>data>steamapps>Jedi Knight

    Help?! Any suggestions/ideas/lamentations?

I'd try different (earlier) video drivers. If that doesn't work you may have to install some type of VM (virtual machine) and run Steam & JK from there.

    XP Mode will work.

Yeah, I'm going to set up and emulator and see how that goes. UNTIL THEN, I actually found that turning off 3D acceleration and running in 8 bit colors gives me that crazy reverse-colored pixels, UNTIL you get shot / get a shield / turn on IR goggles, which are effects that wash the screen in a color. That seems to reset the color or something and make the colors normal. So I've just been running it in 8 bit 1280X1024...lol. It does crash every so often, though, when I'm in the menu (Saving!).

I had the same problem, it's not really a windows or driver issue, it's just an old game. There is a fix though, I got it from the steam forums (DF 2: Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith ULTIMATE FIX THREAD - Steam Users' Forums)

I used it and works great now, applicable to both mysteries of the sith and Dark forces 2.

    1. Right click your game in the Steam Games list, click properties, then click "set launch options." In there, you put -windowgui and -displayconfig with a space separating the two!

    2. Now you're ready to launch. It will go ingame, probably in a small window. Go ingame, go to setup on the bottom right, in setup, click Display, you should see "Advanced Options" or "Advanced something" at the bottom. Click it. Don't touch ANYTHING except what's on the left. You want to set the game to render using "RenderBot" or "RenderDroid", which is under the top selection under display "SW: Non-3D] DIBsection windowed display." Click OK, then choose a resolution.
Don't try to fill the entire screen. I'm sorry, if you're using a widescreen monitor, you still have to play in a square window. I have a 1680x1050 monitor and i run the game at 1280x1024, and i just auto-hide the taskbar so I can see my health and ammo HUD.

DO NOT CHECK ENABLE 3D ACCELERATION. If it's checked, un-check it. Also, Drag "View Size" to one little click under the max. If it's all the way to the right you wont be able to see your HUD. Lastly, and you might have to do this every time you launch the game, I know I do, UN CHECK "Backbuffer in System Memory."

You're set! Play the game in a window. It should look and run just fine. The only thing you'll have to do from here on out is make sure that "Backbuffer in system memory" is un-checked or else you'll get weird colors and artifacts that drag across the screen during gameplay.

This should make it run perfectly, hope it helps.
