    GTA IV 1.0.7.0 issues

hi all! thought id share my experiences with GTA 4 1.0.7.0 updated and win7 x64 ..

    so since update ...

    1. major game lag, like a drop in nearly 10fps!
    2. CPU has hit 100c and shut down within 10 min of game starting
    3. discovered dropping graphics settings from med to low made problem worse!
    4. updating to catalyst 10.6 helped ... everything except the problem

so any similar stories and solutions?.. my rigs is not O/c'd in any way..

GTA IV just has problems. Though I did play it through on my HD4850 with the old Athlon II x2 245 at a pretty terrible frame rate. When I upraded to the Phenom II x4 965 I noticed improvements since the game is very CPU heavy, and tweeking the graphics either way only ever lost or gained me a few FPS. Started to play TBoGT and just decided to wait until I get a 5870. I'm also using x64. If your CPU is hitting 100C that's bad news, my Phenom II topped at like 58C with the stock heat sink and fan.

I'd say number 2 would have a hefty impact on number 1. (throttling before thermal shut down)

I haven't updated to the latest patch yet - so I can't say what changes have occurred.

Maybe they have offloaded more workload to the CPU which has pushed yours over the edge.

At yor resolution, you'd still be pretty heavily CPU bound to begin with.

What are it's temps like for idle / load in other games etc?

Was it okay prior to this patch?

pre patch 1.0.7.0 eveything ran sweet.. game wasnt very cpu intensive, all benches had cpu load around 50% give or take, now around %70, all other games seem to play as norm.. except i got oblivion today and that seems to have issues...

If oblivion is having similar high temp/shut down issues, then the GTA patch may be coincidental.

If you are using the stock cooler, it may be worth opening the case to double check that the fan is still running or not clogged with dust etc.

I have been playing GTA (via Steam) on my Radeon HD 4650 OC, I do experience a little lag but is playable. As for my computer temp it hangs around 60 degrees, try getting PC Case System Exhaust PCI Slot Fan Blower Cooler 80mm on eBay (end time 23-Jul-10 22:10:20 BST), it helps getting rid of the heat, put it infront of your graphics card fan and monitor the temp (Speccy). Hope this helps to get rid of some heat.

    ***UPDATE***
obilivon issues were due to Win 7 x64.. the GTA issues were from a combined patch 1.0.7.0 prob,Win 7 x64 and my hardware config, changed down to WIN XP last nite.. ALL PROBLEMS GONE! ..
so is it worth sacraficing 512 Mb ram to solve issues.. frame rate on GTA 4 has gone from the 30's to 50's.. havent installed GRID or any NFS game yet so time will tell!
