    shortcut to game isn't...

for some reason i don't comprehend, the portal shortcut i made in games, neither launches portal (which works fine from the desktop icon) nor appears to have any attributes, as demonstrated in the attached pic

it doesn't even generate a thumbnail, unlike my other steam games

i can live with that, but i'd like to make the 3 tries that generated junk in my games folder disappear, and they won't

    help please...

Try right clicking, run as adminitrator, then delete. Try in safe mode. Try from adminstrator account. One should work.

nice idea, but i am already logged as admin, and safe mode makes no difference

there are no context options on a right click in either case - note that the status bar (or context bar?) at the bottom of the attached image has no info despite the portal icon being chosen... and the other 2 are similarly inert

it's a mystery, and i'd like them to go away

Being logged in as admin and running as admin are different things.

I had trouble with some games like CoD4:MW not working with W7 games explorer and had to go through this process explained here: Games Explorer Folder - Add Games To

removing or deleting unwanted links in games explorer is explained here: Games Explorer Folder - Delete a Game

also some of the related tutorials found at the end of each post may be of help also

thx for the link - there are however no references to the 3 mutant icons in the registry

they are just junk which is like an indelible stain in the folder

thanks for that thought... now if you could embellish it with practical advice on how to do so (for a win7 noob, though a hardware and winxp guru) i would be truly grateful

Portal doesn't show up for me either so I guess it ain't supported? I know it runs through hl2.exe so maybe it has trouble identifying

And running as admin means you rightclick on a shortcut and then click on "run as administrator"

    thx

my problem is that right click has no context menu for the 3 (yes, that's three!) icons i dragged into the games window stupidly in trying to get it to sit there

that worked - they are all sitting there; but that's all - see the o.p. with the picture of my stupid arrangement

    help ! help !! help !!!

i am quite prepared to take on the registry if that's what i need to do to nix them, but have no idea where to start in this case

I guess if you tried the tutorials I posted with no success you can try searching the hidden folder C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\GameExplorer and see if the bad icons are in there and you can try to delete them

I would caution to be absolutely sure that you select the right entry before deleting anything from that folder
