Windows 7: Search option

Search option

Bonjour everyone,
I'm not sure I've created this new thread in the right place so don't hesitate to move it if it's wring though I think it might be a setup otion, anyway...!

It is about the search features. Remeber the old days of windows xp when you were browsing a directory with the explorer, by typing the first letters of your file you get directly or almost to the point you wanted. Now, with windows 7, whenever I type something in the explorer I enter the search engine, is there a way to get back to the old behavior and use the search engine only when I really want to?

Thank you all for your time and support.

I also need to know how to make the search engine actually search when the index is non-exisent. As it is right now, if I search an non-indexed directory the engine return nothing even though it is obvious that there are files corresponding to the criterias!?

I did fix the problem of searching inside indexed folders. For a reason I don't know index were screwed up but an index rebuild fixed the problem. Now, question, is there any way to speed up the process. 140 000 files and took almost two hours to complete.

I still want to know how I can navigate through directories by type letters of files I search without having to revert to the search engine which seems to be by default and only option to do so. Anyone knows how to do that?

Thanks folks.

Switch to Details view, then click anywhere in the right pane and enter the first letter or letters of the file/folder you are looking for and it will take you there.

Thanks Ztruker,
I had already found the solution and kindly posted it in my previous post but Brink replaced the posting because I've included a useful link!

Brink, instead of deleting all the solution I've provided you should have deleted only the link.... Worth nothing trying to contribute with clear solution if people goes after you and delete your work. I can understand why you did it but simply removing the link would have been enough!
