    Migrating to a bigger hard drive


    Hi all,

    I have recently purchased a larger drive than my existing 300gb unit, which I would like to move to a new build.

    I have tried to restore the disk image to my larger drive but the recovery disk cleverly assigns the 300gb drive as the drive to install on.

    Is there some simple way in which I can tell the disk image to install onto the bigger hdd without having to do a clean install, which I was holding back till SP1 came out?

    Unplug the 300GB disk, install the disk image onto the larger one

    Whatever software you are using is probably cloning the partition and isn't giving you an option to increase the size. That's fine, because you can use something like PartedMagic to resize (increase) the partition size on the new drive.

    thanks for your replies, DeaconFrost, I was just using the W7 recovery disk method after I burnt it onto a cdr.

    Kirsch, I'll give that a try, and if it works I can then erase the original 300gb drive with command line after re-attaching it.

    I was rather hoping that it would have given me the choice of where to install as I had used command line to wipe the 300gb drive!

    You shouldn't need a command line to do anything of what you are trying to accomplish.

    After he installs on the larger drive he is going to use the 300GB drive as a secondary (i'm assuming), and sounds like OP is fond of using the command line to wipe and format the secondary drive, which is completely fine :)

    well, after much trying it dodn't work!

    The disk image would only install happily back onto the 300gb volume it was created from - most bizarre.

    Looks like it may be a re-install from scratch and use easy transfer for the various accounts.

    What program did you use to create the disk image with?

    I'm guessing they are both SATA drives, is this true? If so, try these steps:

    1. Disconnect the new drive
    2. Connect only the old 300GB drive and restore the image to it. Boot and make sure all is well.
    3. Connect the new drive.
    4. Clone the old 300GB drive to the new drive.
    5. Remove the 300GB drive and connect the new drive where it was connected.

    System should boot and run okay. If not, run Startup Repair from install DVD up to three times.

    6. Connect the old 300GB drive and format it from Windows Explorer or Command line. Make sure it is not set as Active (from Disk Management), only the new drive should be active.

    I'm creating the disk image with Windows7 backup and restore function.

    the drives are both SATA.

    I have now rebooted from the old 300gb drive. The disk image is saved as a 150gb file size so why it won't fit onto a 500gb drive I have no idea.

    I put the recovery disk I had created and booted from it. Located the disk image and tried to restore it onto the 500gb drive and it said that there was an error and the image could not be restored.

    But, I never made the 500gb drive active, before doing any of this, I just assumed that the recovery disk would do all the necessary stuff for me.

    I see from your specs you use a lot of WD drives. Is either of the two drive (old and new) a WD?
