Sleep and Hibernate cause re-start in Windows 7 7100

Hi all -

I just installed Win7 build 7100 on my old Compaq X1000 laptop. In general it is working pretty well, but when I try to "sleep" or "hibernate" it restarts instead.

I had noticed originally that the "sleep" and "hibernate" options were not available (they were greyed out) but somewhere I think I changed something (don't recall where) and was able to get them to show as shut down options.

After I try to sleep or hibernate and it restarts, I get an error message. I never really see a bluescreen by the way, it just restarts, seemingly normally (though perhaps a bit more slowly than a clean restart).

Here is an example of the error message that shows up upon the restart:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7100.2.0.0.256.1

Please zip up the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and upload it with your next reply. That'll give us a chance to look at the memory dumps and see if we can figure something out.

Hi Timber, the problem looks like it is being caused by your video drivers. Try using either native Win 7 drivers or check for updated drivers.

Thanks much Hammerhead. I truly appreciate it.

When I first installed Win 7 I had a heck of a time getting it to use the right video drivers. It kept defaulting me to VGA and even when I would uninstall, it would immediately reinstall the standard drivers upon reboot. Anyway, I finally got it to accept updated drivers that I pulled off of Compaq/HPs website so I could get better than VGA. Unfortunately I guess that is now causing the reboot problem.

Do you know where else I could go for better drivers? I have an ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 graphics card and ATI is no longer supporting it with updated drivers. The newest drivers on Compaq's site are from ~2005.

Thanks again!

You're most welcome. Uninstall the drivers that you are using now and then try using Windows update to see if it finds any drivers. When you installed your current video drivers did you use XP compatibility mode to install them? If not then that might be worth a try.

I've looked and there are no native Win 7 drivers for the 9200 but that's not to say they may not be available via Windows update. I would hazard a guess that it may not be supported by Microsoft as it may be deemed as legacy hardware.

I did not try using XP mode - I'll give that a try as well as trying to uninstall and look for updated drivers. I suspect MS is not supporting it - I think you are right - my machine is probably too old. Thanks again - I'll let you know what happens.
