    Cpu at 100%

In the last few days my netbook for no apparent reason has gone super slow. Chrome takes ages to load webpages when it use to take a second. The computer is very unresponsive.

When i check the task manager the processes list is stuffed up. The processes keep jumping up and down the list. Some times a process is at the top of list but a second later it's at the bottom of list. As soon as I log in my cpu usage is a 100% when i have no applications running.

I'm scanning with avast now and then will scan with Malwarebytes.

    Netbook specs:

    Thinkpad 100xe

    CPU
    AMD Athlon Neo MV-40
    Huron 65nm Technology
    RAM
    2.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 159MHz (5-5-5-15)
    Graphics
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics (Lenovo)
    Hard Drive
156GB Hitachi HITACHI HTS545016B9A300 ATA Device (IDE)

Anyone know why my pc is lagging so much?

    Thank Si8mon

Usually if nothing should be wrong, then you might have an infection. Get a decent scanning tool to check what's going on.

Yes, viruses and malware are possibilities.

Look at the task manager and processes. Sort by CPU usage. Which one seems to be the hog?

If you boot up in safe mode, does the CPU use 100%?

    There are lots of possibilities...

You may also go into device manager, and under the "System Devices" category see if there is an entry for "High Definition Audio Controller". if so, try disabling it.

Also codecs can be an issue. See if you have ffdshow running as a process. If so, kill it and see what happens.

One person claimed it was his AHCI drivers for his HDs

When i sort the processes by cpu the list goes crazy with lots of processes moving up and down list in a second. ffdshow doesn't seem to be on the processes list.

I disabled High Definition Audio Controller and now the cpu is jumping between 70% and 90%. This is still way above my average cpu usage.

Did you bring it up in safe mode and check usage?

    That's great news! Good work

Just out of interest, have you had a chance to run Malwarebytes yet? If so, did it find/fix much? (just curious to see if it finds anything that Avast missed, it often does)

Ok i just did that and my cpu usage is very low averaging between 1%-4%. So could this be a driver related program?
