Windows 7: Display Awakes but Computer Won't

My computer, Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 MB, worked perfectly in Win XP Pro SR3 32 bit. Computer went to sleep and would awaken immediately when mouse, Logitech LX7 wireless/optical or space bar were hit. I upgraded the OS to Win 7 Pro x64. The upgrade went well other than me having to learn the new system. One major problem is that when the computer is idle and the display turns off I have problems trying to wake the computer. I move the mouse and the display turns on immediately and the mouse will move a short distance and then freeze. The cursor will stay locked for 30 seconds to a minute and I will again be able control the mouse. However if the computer hasn't been used for a number of hours the display awakes and the mouse moves a short distance but I'm never able to regain control of the mouse as it stays locked in place and I have to reboot to use the computer.

I have searched these forums and have carefully checked both the BIOS and the Advanced Power Management Setting to make sure that the computer is never allowed to Hibernate and that the HD is not turned off and that every power saving function is disabled - all to no avail.

When it happens, type "event viewer" in search and look for errors. You may get the answer.

I looked in the Event Viewer and found the following two entries repeated across many days. Both of these are listed in the Service Control Manager with an Event ID of 7000. These usually preceded an Unexpected Shut Down.

The Sentinel HASP Fridge service failed to start due to the following error:

Don’t know what to make of these as they relate to things far above my pay grade.

Do you have any software made by Aladdin Knowledge Systems installed? That is what Sentinel HASP Fridge is associated with. What antivirus do you use? Some cause problems when used with Aladdin software.

I have a dongle that uses an Aladdin HASP. This dongle and anti virus software, Vipre were both installed on XP without incident. Of course that doesn't mean it will be without incident on Win 7. I will see if I can download any updated driver from the Aladdin site. Previously Windows update always did a good job of keeping the Aladdin HASP working properly in XP.

If Aladdin HASP has not been updated for Win 7, it will most likely never run properly. It is obsolete software. There a lot of third party antivirus programs that cause problems with Win 7. I recommend Microsoft Security Essential or Avast. The same holds true for many third party firewalls. Win 7 is a totally different OS from XP.

The only problem with Carl's suggestions is that Avast is one of the antiviruses guaranteed to cause problems problems with Aladdin software.

I would try unistalling your current antivirus, restarting the computer, and then trying to put your computer to sleep and wake it. If the problem does not occur, download and install the award winning and free Microsoft Security Essentials. MSE is known for not conflicting with other software.

The scan showed no problems.

That means your system files are probably OK. Have you followed the above suggestions?
