Actually, quite a few people install 7 on computers with P4 processors. Chances are you have hyper-threading too.

If you want to stick with XP, but have it look like 7, you can try the theme found here: Windows 7 Theme for XP (Awesome Theme With Exact Look)

There are 32 bit versions of Windows 7. If you have a CPU that is only 32 bits you can still install Windows 7 provided you meet all the other Windows 7 requirements. If your PC supports Vista 32 bit (has hardware drivers) then it will also work with Windows 7.

Have you run the Windows 7 upgrade Advisor? HERE

I have a 3Ghz P4 which I have installed 32-bit Win 7 Pro on. Does your machine have at least 1G of RAM? A machine like that is good for surfing and checking email but you wouldn't be satisfied with the performance if you tried things like game playing and video editing.

I wonder if the op/ts is speaking of The aero effect. If so then you may need a graphics card solution. Good luck to you with this problem and welcome to SevenForums

I have, as many others installed Win 7 on much older systems than yours. You may have to increase your Ram and update your Graphics Card. The Upgrade Advisor will tell you what you need to do.

Win 7 on a P4 will not be a speed demon regardless of how much RAM or what video card you put in it... If you want an OS that will get pretty decent performance from your P4 you should look at a Linux distro such as Ubuntu.

I use Windows 7 Professional at work on a P4 3 Ghz w/HT machine with 1 GB RAM, an ATI Radeon HD 4650 and two monitors and it works just fine. It's not a speed demon like my Core i3 at home by a longshot but it does work well and actually feels somewhat snappier than XP. I can definitely tell you it is far snappier than when it had Vista put on it.

I've even done some gaming while keeping the second monitor showing an e-mail inbox I need to monitor for work purposes and the games work properly. I've tried Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Need For Speed Carbon, Most Wanted, Deus Ex Invisible War, Max Payne 2, they all run fine. I've also tried Portal, Half-Life 2 (original, EP1, and EP2). You're not going to be running cutting edge games by any stretch of the imagination at a decent resolution and with my monitors supporting up to 1280 x 1024 and me running them at 1152 x 864, it's a bit limited but will work.

You can shrink your XP installation to make a test partition to Dual Boot Win7 to see how you like it. Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

If you decide you don't want Win7, you can just delete it's partition in XP Disk Management. We can even help you get rid of XP if you want and recover the first partition space into Win7.
