Shortcut icons defaulting to generic

Some of my shortcut icons on my desktop behave strangely. An example is the one for Microsoft Security Essentials. The name is too long so I shorten it to MSSE. It will only rename with Administrator rights. And then the icon image changes to the generic image. Using Properties ... Change Icon has no effect.
