    Computer Bootup Problem..PLease Help!!

    Hey all,

Here's the deal. I m currently running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and wanted to run the windows experience assessment (the one with the scores 5.9-7.9). So i start it up and it proceeds to hang. I waited another few minutes but to no avail, so i canceled it. After canceling, that started to hang as well, so i had no choice but to force a restart. Now comes the problem. Before this, my computer would boot up normal, fairly quick and easy. Now after this force restart, when my computer shows the bios manufacturer screen with the typical option on the bottom for Bios, boot up menu, ect..like every other computer boot up, that screen hangs a little longer than usual. I thought that was no big deal, but now after the "starting windows" screen with the animation, and right before the welcome screen, the screen is black with no cursor for about a minute or longer. After a minute or so, then the welcome screen pops up, when before it would go right to the welcome screen after the "starting windows" screen was done.

Anyone know what went wrong, and why my boot up is all screwed up? Ive tried system restore, but that didnt work. I also booted into safe mode, and that seemed to startup normally. I also uninstalled and reinstalled my video card drivers, but to no avail. I have no clue what happened, but it's really annoying, and any help would be greatly appreciated!!

No, I do not know what is wrong with your computer, but if you do a clean boot, we will both find out.

    Thanks for your reply.

I followed the steps for the link you gave me, but the problem is still there.

I guess a reformat is in my future...which is the last thing i would like to do..

    Any other ideas?

If the problem clears up in Safe Mode as Rich wisely suggests, then it is likely a driver or failing service that is not loaded into Safe Mode. To trace prob driver look in Device Manager for driver in (!) error, look for newer drivers cued in optional Windows Updates or on Support Downloads webpage for your computer or device model.

Work through repeat errors in Event Viewer>Admin View to google repeat error text and ID# to find how others have resolved it.

Also study the Performance Log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking through WEI score link. Look for cued issues at top of page, Generate a System Health report while there.

Type "problems" in Start search box to see if problems sent to MS have returned solutions.

Run sfc /scannow as admin. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then run a Repair Install from desktop: Repair Install

Test your RAM with memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes or overnight. Test HD with maker's full diag/repair CD scan: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If the safe mode does not work, follow Gregs advice, one step at a time. Do not attempt anything that you do not understand. Ask us for information, so that you understand the benefits and consequences of each procedure.

Hey guys, here are some updates:

I booted into safe mode, and the bootup is fine. No black screen.

I have tried all of the steps above except the repair install. Everything was ok with those.

Now, i uninstalled my video card drivers, and that required a restart. After restart, the bootup was fine. Then i reinstalled the drivers and restarted. The black screen came back. So now i uninstalled then reinstalled an older set of drivers. Same result.

So now i was thinking maybe it was something with the resolution. I always keep it on 1680x1050 which is the standard and recommended size with my 22" monitor. I decided to switch it to 1600x1000..and now the bootup was fine. After i uninstalled my video card drivers before and restarted, the resolution normally changes after...and that didn't give me the black screen delay either.

With this new info, would you guys know why this is happening? Do i have to change my resolution everytime if i want to avoid the bootup delay?

Install one drive at a time to test. When you find the bad one, just update. Its a driver problem, lets concentrate on that.
Where did you get the drivers, update or website? Go to website.

This is abnormal behavior which would set me looking for the perfect Display driver. Your screen resolution should hold after setting it by rightclicking Desktop.

Are you using the full Video driver software or just the driver? Try both.

Check optional Windows Updates for any newer, then the Support Downloads webpage for your comptuer model, then your Video card maker's Downloads page for their latest.

You may need to install Vista driver in Compatibility mode if Win7 drivers are sparse or undeveloped: Compatibility Mode

Sometimes these unusual problems are solved by reinstalling video card.

    Update:

Well, i kept messing around with different drivers..uninstalling and reinstalling, then randomly just tried the latest drivers one more time, and now it seems to be good!

Well see how long this lasts, but thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate it!
