Can't get into Safe Mode

I've had this problem no matter which version of Windows I've used: I have trouble getting into Safe Mode. Some technicians have told me to tap F8 while the computer is starting. The Windows 7 Help says to hold down the F8 key while starting. I need to get into Safe Mode and have been trying both methods - and nothing is working. I think there is a precise time when you have to hold down the F8 key - but I can't find it and need some guidance. Someone please help!!!

I think you can go into MSConfig and select restart in Safe mode and when you restart, you will start in safe mode.

get to msconfig by typing it into searchbar. I think the option is a checkbox.

I'm using Windows 7 and I have never seen a list of my hardware during boot. Perhaps this is the problem. Is there a switch or option that will show me my hardware during boot? Then I would know when to press F8.

Are you sure you don't have an infection of any sort that is preventing you from accessing safe mode? Why are you wanting to get into safe mode?

The reason I ask is because of this warning from the article at bleeping computer: How to start Windows in Safe Mode

Quote:

Since the malware is not allowing us to actually boot into safe mode, you have no way of getting to a point where you can run the System Configuration utility again to uncheck the /Safeboot option. Thus, you are stuck with a computer constantly attempting to get into safe mode and not being able to do so.

Make sure your system is clean first. What Anti-Virus programs are you using?
