Windows 7: PC boots up but black screen

A few weeks back the PC would not wake up from it's sleep mode so I turned it off and it fixed the problem but now when I turn the PC on it boot's and I hear the 'MS jingle' but I am looking at a black screen, after hitting the restart button it start's up and I get the massage the PC was not closed down properly what mode do I wish to start it in, I have checked the task manager before closing down a number of times and there has been nothing running at close down---any idea's---cannot find anything in search similar

Can you enter into "safe mode"?

No, it starts up in 'normal windows mode' the arrow keys don't work to highlight 'safe mode' ---I have a Logitech cordless mouse/keyboard

In the standard boot up mode, the keyboard must usually function as a "legacy" device. In other words, it has to behave like an old PS2 keyboard. It's not a problem with most USB keyboards, that's what the "Legacy USB" setting in BIOS is for, but it may be a problem with a wireless keyboard.

If you have an old wired keyboard, plug it in and then boot up. Your arrow keys will probably work right to select safe mode. After you get the problem fixed, go back to wireless and enjoy.

Also, if possible, try to connect a different screen, just in case if it works. If not, then it's definitely same error in the system.

First enter BIOS setup to see that Windows 7 HD is set to boot first, try to start again. Then return to BIOS setup to set DVD drive as first to boot, before HD: How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD - Boot to CD.URL

See if the Windows 7 DVD or Repair CD will boot, then select Repair, accept any offered Repair, copy down the details of given Repair.

Next boot back into DVD REpair console or Repair CD, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to repair the system MBR. Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times - Windows 7 Forums.URL

If this fails, make sure either Windows 7 or it's 100mb System Reserved boot partition are marked Active: Partition - Mark as Active - Windows 7 Forums.URL then run Startup Repair again x3.

The drivers are up to date, I am not very PC 'savey' and have never gone into the bios---but in bios I can only find a HDD-S.M.A.R.T which is not active--cannot find 7 HD (might be looking in the wrong spot) what heading would it be under
