Windows 7: file selection issues

i am using win 7 hp 64 bit
actually i use "single click to open an item setting"
but the issue is: when i click on any video or song file it is executed(in background) but side by side either one more file or folder present in same folder gets executed.
i mean when i click on 1 file it will run but automatically one more file/folder in same folder is also clicked upon.
if i use "double click to open an item" setting, then the double clicked item runs but one more file/folder in same folder is single clicked.
i have tried changing mouse, changing keyboard, disabling touch pad and even system restore, but all in vain
this is driving me nuts
somebody please help me.
