Thumbnail Desktop icons a step backwards

I've concluded that having the desktop icons show a contextualized thumbnail of the file's content is more confusing than helpful. I have my icons set too small to be able to make out anything from most of the pictures, and the file extension is usually hidden, leaving me to examine each icon carefully to see what the heck it is.

The old system of showing a default icon per file type was not nearly so sophisticated, but much more helpful.

You can always refer to this Folder Options - Open and ensure that the option Always show icons, never thumbnails is checked.
