Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

Ive been using W7 since the early builds and am on HP 32bit these days.
In the past if i lost internet connection i would get a red cross on the network icon. This would go away once connection was restored.
This past week or so this cross keeps appearing. Thing is the connection is fine, no problens what so ever.

Anyone else experienced this. Please no "Clean install" replies, thats way to drastic.

    Thanks for any help.

It sounds as though it could be a driver issue. On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

As your board is based on the NVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP, you could try to see if these drivers might help (make sure that you create a restore point prior to installing) NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.53 WHQL

Thanks, ill give that a go over the weekend.
To be clear, in the past when i lost internet (not network) it was always down to the cable modem (this has been replaced and no more losses). If i pull out the cable then thats when i can force the red cross.
But now im not getting any problems, no loss of network or internet, just all of a sudden the red cross appears.
Ive been running this install since Oct last year when W7 came out so unless something is affecting it i shouldn't need updated drivers, although i guess the ones i have might be corrupt.

    Thanks again.

Could it possibly be the Ethernet cable?

It might but wouldn't that at least interrupt my network connection? I guess it could just not be sitting in the socket firmly...hmmm, thats a thought.

Cheers, ill check that as well.

Check the connectors on the end of your Ethernet cable. Are the latching tabs intact or broken on either/both ends?

I have a SpeedStream 4100b modem that was on 24/7 for a long, long time. Also began experiencing the same problem of red X on icon several months ago. ISP suggested turning off power to modem for about 30 seconds maybe once a week. This forces modem to reset internal settings. Haven't experienced any other issues. Just a thought.

    Thanks to both of you.

Ill certainly check the cable tonight (im at work now so cant do anything).

The modem is only a few weeks old and has been on and off a few times recently, i guess i could try turning it off and on again if the cable and driver update doesn't work.
