Explorer opens a new window every time I open a folder Hi there,
I've been searching a lot, trying to find a solution to this problem, but no solution.
The problem is that, when I open a folder, explorer will allways open a new window, and I end up with lots of windows, which becomes really annoying.
Also, nothing happens when I change folders options to "open each folder in the same window". I checked it, unckecked it, checked it, restarted the computer, stopped the explorer process at the task manager, nothing worked.
This is really annoying. Please help.

Thank you karlsnooks, but in my message I said that that didn't work.
That would be a too obvious problem to post here.

You should have to do nothing.
Only a system that has been altered could show such a problem.
First, try running the system file checker. System File Checker - SFC /SCANNOW Command
Oh yes, if you have one of those Win Explorer substitutes loaded, then get rid of it. They are nothing but trouble. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba Satellite L305D laptop OS MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit CPU AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core QL-64, 2100 Mhz, 2 Cores Motherboard TOSHIBA Portable PC (Socket M2/S1G1) Memory 4.0GB (2x2GB) DDR2 @ 333MHz 5-5-5-15 Graphics Card ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics (Toshiba) Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Generic PnP Monitor @ 1280x800 Screen Resolution 1280 x 800 Keyboard standard PS/2 Keyboard Mouse HP Wireless Optical Mobile Mouse Model FHA-3410 Hard Drives 125.03GB Corsair CSSD-V128GB2 ATA Device (IDE)

I have the exact same problem and like dfps14, I made sure that the folder option setting was set to "Open each folder in the same window". Then I also ran the System File Checker - SFC /SCANNOW Command like karlsnooks had suggested. The results came back:
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
My windows explorer still opens every folder in a new window... Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Premium N 32bit |

Nothing to suggest mtoda - Win 7 shouldnt work like that
Too bad you guys were having problems with the OS - but some people (like myself) actually would rather have each new folder open into it's own window. Thats so I can look at the contents of both a parent and child folder and then easily drag stuff from one folder to another or in some cases check for duplicates in both folders - but my preference would less than desirable without a utility like "WindowManager" - which remembers both the Size and the Position of each folder window thats opened (like XP used to).
So what a great thing that Microsoft has so many user settable options so that we can each set up our environments the way we want !!!!!!! | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Alienware Aurora OS Win 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Core I7 980X O.C. to 4.0 Ghz Motherboard Custom Intel mATX (Bios ver A10) Memory 12GB 1600 mhz triple channel DDR3 - Kingston Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5970 2GB Video Card Sound Card Creative Labs Titanium sound blaster Monitor(s) Displays 30" Dell LCD Screen Resolution 2560 x 1600 Keyboard Logitech G15 (original version) Mouse Logitech MX1000 Laser - Wireless PSU 850 Watt Case Alienware Aurora Cooling Water Hard Drives 240 GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD

Hey Happyman,
It's great to have the pop up windows when you're moving files, but when I'm just browsing for stuff (especially when I have many levels of folders) it gets really annoying to have to close so many windows just to get to one file.
Win 7 is a much better OS than XP, but there are many features I miss such as "auto align" function on desktop. Also, I find that my desktop items gets "rearranged" every now and then.
As for the issue I had, I found another solution here: Solution: Explorer open each folder in same window error and SQL Management Studio, IE and Team Explorer errors | David's Blog
And that worked for me. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Premium N 32bit Explorer opens a new window every time I open a folder problems? All times are GMT -5. The time now is 09:50 PM. | |
