Possibly a stupid question, but have you checked your machine for malware (e.g. viruses, trojans, etc.)?
Can you copy the text into some other program (e.g. Notepad++, Word, etc.)?
Do you have access to a Live Ubuntu CD?
You could try to read the file using gedit and if successful save it.
Remember to add ".txt" to the new name, as Linux won't automatically add it to text files.
Additional (the other Issue)
Regarding the issue with the "Script" font, it is still present on my machine.
I'm sure my updates are up to date, so it hasn't been fixed yet.
