Windows 7: Computer Won't Sleep because of WD Hard Drive

Computer Won't Sleep because of WD Hard Drive

I'm trying to get my Computer to sleep but it won't because of the Western Digital 1TB external hard drive that is connected to my network. The backup program is causing this problem, if I turn it off then it will sleep. I would like to keep it turned on because it will save any changes that are made to my folders and files.

I would use the back program that comes with Windows 7, but that doesn't work. I get "Access is denied" Error code: 0x80070005. I think the problem may be from being connected to a network.

Any thoughts?

Many are using a sync program to keep the exact same file structure and have less system impact.

SyncToys and MS Sync are the two most mentioned. You might want to try them.

Please read this tutorial to make sure that you are correctly using Win 7 Backup and Restore. I don't have a network to test on, but a networked situation is the one situation where Win 7 Backup and Restore should never have any problems.

For simply backing up your data, then definitely take a look at SyncToy which you can also schedule to run with frequency and time you desire using TaskSchd.MSC. Procedure is explained in the SyncToy Help option from its main menu bar.

If you are using the backup software that came with the drive the backup is always running so the computer is never idle for sleep mode to kick in.
I'm using the Windows 7 backup program with no problems. Check that your WD drive is unlocked when you are trying to use it.

Hope this helps.

You also may want to check out Robocopy...

I created a .CMD file that is scheduled to run 4 times a day... and it's wicked fast after the first 'seed' is completed.

Total control, and the price is right! >>>FREE<<<

What's not to like!

Robocopy is an excellant tool if you're comptable with using an editor and creating a batch file. Here is a link to some documentation on Robocopy:

But I would still recommend using the backup software that came with Windows 7. It's easy to setup and use compared to using Robocopy.
