    can't delete/rename catroot2 folder

    Hi,

I have Windows 7 enterprise with all the updates/service packs applied

When I try to update directx it complains about not being able to verify the signature of a cabinet file and asks to check the cryptographic services.

I googled for that error and all links say to stop cryptographic services and remove the c:\windows\system32\catroot2 folder

I stopped the cryptographic services and when I try to remove that folder, it removes everything from inside that folder but the actual folder remains and I can't even enter it after that

When I try to remove it or take ownership it says the following:
    c:\Windows\System32>takeown /f catroot2 /r /d y
ERROR: The system cannot find the file specified.

but the folder is there, it's just not accessible at all.

I ran chkdsk but it did not show any errors.

My question is how do I fix this so I can update directx?

    Please help

    Thanks

    open cmd.exe as an adminstrator.
    navigate to system32
    locate cmd.exe
    Right click
    Run as administrator
    type in sfc \scannow
reboot see if that fixes your issue.

I ran that, it said that it could not fix all the problems and asked to check the log

I rebooted, the directx issue is not fixed and when I try again to run sfc /scannow it says:
    C:\Windows\System32>sfc /scannow

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

    Please advise

Actually what's strange is that if I run cmd as Administrator and then run the sfc command it displays that error

But if I run cmd from start - run then run sfc then it works but it does not fix the directx problem I am having and neither the catroot2 folder.

    Please help
    Thanks

Glad you got it fixed. I have never had a problem with a web installer before so I never would have thought that to be it.
