Hi, I want to make use of the gestures that windows 7 has support for, especially the two fingered ones, but I am just using a normal inbuilt touchpad on my laptop. Is it possible? The make of the trackpad isn't synaptics, it's ALPS.

This will depend on the driver available to work with the actual touch pad - The two finger gesture you want is part of the new multi-touch features of Windows 7 and may not be available in older touchpads from the simple fact that it's not supported by the actual hardware.
If the hardware support is there then using the latest drivers should provide the function
Check the manufacturer's site for your laptop for driver updates

I think, and this is only my opinion, the hardware for a touchpad is so similar between the two manufacturers that the drivers are virtually interchangeable.
I do not believe that the incorrect driver will cause any physical damage to the hardware but I would advise that you use the correct driver to be certain
