I had a few discussions with some Dev team members about the VM Win XP Mode, and they stated that the best upgrade process for the base is to Uninstall vm , upgrade then re-Install.
You can find a lot about the VM XP on the TechNet forum and blogs. (so far its {win 7 and vm-xp} not that impressive to me yet).
