Windows 7: File Association keeps Dropping for Karaoke files !

Nope... still doesn't work... I'm convinced it's because of the automatic zip file association with Explorer... when I try and change the default open app from Explorer to Karafun, the "always use this program" is dimmed...

Does anyone know how to disable zip support with Win 7 ?... I found some registry keys to remove, for XP, to stop zip support... I tried them, but I'm unable to delete the key's for .zip and .cab

Any help is appreciated !

Gonna give it a try...

I was able to disable Win 7's exploer zip features... when you click on the zip file, it doesn't open... but, when I associate the zip file with the Karafun.exe app, it only works for the active windows session... upon reboot, it drops the association... even though I'm choosing "always open with program"...

The funny thing is, that in the list of extensions when you choose "default programs - associate a file type..." zip doesn't appear in the list... and there are zip files on my PC... shouldn't that list look for any/all file types on your computer and present the list ?

Now, I'm going to research and see if there is a way to "force" a filetype to open with a particular program... some way so that it doesn't revert back, upon reboot... any ideas guys ?

Can't believe how much time I'm spending on this... I reinstalled WinZip (when I do, .zip appears on the file association listing - where I can choose Karafun.exe as the default ap)... then, I "unclick" .zip using WinZip's default app choices.. I reboot, and I'm able to click on the .zip files, and they open with Karafun.exe... I reboot a 2nd time, and they "REVERT" back to use Explorer folders... I've disabled the zip folder program, so when you click on the file, it does nothing...

If anyone can tell me how to force an application to open a file, using RegEdit, I'll try that... right now, I'm at a standstill...

I had a similar problem with file association. what I had to do was associate the offender with a different app tehn reboot. I then associated it with the correct program and the always use this ungrayed and I could check it. Fine since then. I hope your problem is this simple.

Tks for the tip... just tried it, rebooted twice, and the association went back to Windows Explorer !

This is frustrating... I realize that Karafun (the app I'm trying to have automatically open the zip files) doesn't have .zip as a selectable choice in it's own file association menu... but the program states it will open zip files, and it does, flawlessly... but, it's windows that won't hold on to it's association when you choose it...

Any other suggestions are appreciated.. can't I make a registry entry ? or a 3rd party program ?

Have you tired contacting Karafun? It may be a problem with Windows 7 support. Try running the program in Vista mode.

I did send Karafun an email. But honestly, I believe this issue to be application independent. The whole issue revolves around the fact that Windows 7 (and Vista) uses Explorer as the default app to open zip files... and, if you remove the registry key for this (which I did), to have Win 7 not treat zip files like folders, it won't. That works. But, if you then assocaite a "program" with zip files (a program, aside from winzip or winrar) it will revert back to explorer after a reboot. There's somethign going on with the registry that is "resetting' this.

If someone can show me how to associate a zip file with "any" program, where Win 7 will remember the newly assocaited app. after a couple of reboot's, I'm all ears. that's my dilema
