    "COMCTL32.DLL Missing" (Not April Fools!)

As title suggests I'm getting the comctl32.dll error.

Cause: Google Chrome was slow so I ran Herd Protect. While removing a few things it detected something went wrong.

    Info:

-I see this file in System 32 however I'm still seeing this problem. It states file was modified today.

-Several programs won't run because of this. Chrome included.

-Used SFC. It detected corrupt files but could not fix them

    Complications:

-No previous system recovery options to restore to. Somehow they got turned off!

-Tried downloading Windows 10, I want to anyway, but it won't install.

Any help that can be offered is welcome, thank you!

    Hey there!

Shutdown your computer and open it, when you've opened it spam F8 rapidly after the BIOS splash screen has disappeared. Now you will be given several options. Choose Safe Mode and let it load. When you are in Safe mode go to My Computer, right-click your C drive and choose Properties. Now go to the Tools tab and choose Check Now make sure to have ticked Automatically fix file system errors, when it's ticked let the test begin.

I also cannot run many of my cleaner scan applications. Could this be a virus rather than a file error?

Open an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow.

The SFC scan is one of the first ones I usually try when things aren't working as they should, and usually it fixes the problem. It detected a corrupt file but couldn't fix it.

    Not seen/used it myself.
    All A/V type progs have
    a) a log file,
    b) an ignore option (whitelist)
    c) a restore option.
    d) quarentine folder.

In your case i would use option b, as im assuming that COM.... is > still < in the quarentine folder.

This is NOT the SFC log. As it says, in the CMD prompt, "Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log". Attach that file. Also run chkdsk /f /r on an elevated command prompt.
