When I try to use command prompt to switch the computer into safe mode it first says "the command "bc" is not recognized as an internal or external command". (code) X/sources/bcdedit/set_safeboot_minimal (I didn't use underscores, I used spaces, please check this to see if I did it right.)

I tried it with the advice you gave me and its come up with "an unknown command was specified, try /bcdedit ? for a list of commands" (code: "X: sources/ bcdedit / set safeboot minimal" )

Well, I typed out the command line exactly how you posted it, and we got this as a result.

The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
The system cannot find the file specified.

What to do now...

I have no other suggestions for safe mode.
If it were my computer after spending so much time, I would save my stuff and reinstall.

Windows crashed. Now can't boot, even in repair mode or safe mode.
Let me open by saying I'm too old to understand most of the jargon and directions found in a technical forum like this. I've been trying to fix this myself for about two weeks, and have made so many changes, I've probably made a complete hash of it. The latest thing I did was to attempt a...

I left my laptop running for a while when i left the room. When I came back it had frozen, I hadn't been doing anything untoward, I had been running a few programs at once, just like firefox and word. Anyway I had to turn it off with the power button. Then when I tried turning it back on I was able...
