I have the exact same problem.
After some maintenance on computer (updates & defrag with perfectdisk 10), i rebooted and then no logon screen:
black screen with non-moving mouse cursor, hard drive do something during 1 minute and then stops.
I can't do anything with keyboard or mouse, so i have to stop it manually holding 5 sec the power key.
I tried to reboot pressing the f8 key:
At first i did "last known good config" --> same problem
Tried safe mode --> same problem
I also tried boot repair with and without dvd (actually a usb key working perfectly) nothing happen. It reports boot ok.
ntbtlog doesn't say anything.
Restauration doesn't find restore point (i don't remember if i had some).
Everything seems ok with bootrec bootsect & bcdedit.
Disk has been chkdsk no problem with that, it is perfectly readable.
Same for registry, opened with regpe. Winlogon and session manager keys are good (i did compare them with another computer running same OS).
And each time i try to do a sfc /scannow i have the same error:
"There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again" whatever if i do this from repair mode, dvd repair mode, or even another computer (sfc /scannow /offbootdir=x:\ /offwindir=x:\windows).
I also removed pagefile and hiberfil, they are recreated each time i try to boot.
I am not using daemon tools, alchohol or WMware, or some tools like that.
So the problem happens just before winlogon load.
If anyone have an idea, suggestion or fix, it would be nice to help me with that!
I'm also so sorry for my bad english...
Many thanks to everyone,
