Cool article, but there's an easier way that does not disable Shell Hardware Detection or AutoPlay!.
When using removable media, instead of simply yanking the device out (as most people do), use the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the Taskbar Notification area:
That way, you won't screwup the filesystem of the device, and you'll never see the "Scan and Fix" prompt...
Tru dat, but unfortunately disabling the "Shell Hardware Detection" service will also stop the "Windows Image Acquisition" (WIA) service for scanners and cameras.
Well that's not as excellent.
Feel free to delete this post if it will impose more of a burden on people's computers than it would help. I posted it rather quickly without the disclaimers necessary, so I'm not sure how helpful this might be in the long run. I won't be offended.
The thread is fine.
It's just a decision that folks will need to make if it will work for them or not if they wanted to try it. That's all. :)
Yea, I just try to avoid giving advice that has an exception or risk list the length of a medicine commercial.
