Delete interrupted, now space locked but files gone

    Here's my problem.

I was in the middle of a deletion of my iTunes library, when my system decided to lockup and glitch.

I had no option but to restart the PC. Now, the folder/files I was deleting is gone, but the recycle bin is empty.....and the space the iTunes folder occupied is still "spoken for"

Meaning, the PC says the folder/files are gone, but the external HDD is saying the folder/files are still present and still take up 38+GB

I thought if I rebooted it would correct the occupied volume value on the HDD. It didn't. I still only have 5 GB left for space.....not the expected 40+ GB.

I then tried shutting down, unplugging the HDD, then re-plugging it back in after boot up. No go.

I have absolutely no idea how to handle this. This is a first for me.

Anyone know what I could possibly do for a first step in this case. Any programs that could track down the unaccounted for space and allocate it properly.

Maybe some super disc check script. Any help greatly appreciated, I really need that space right now. Thank you.

Try running chkdsk on the external HDD.

Make sure the first checkbox is selected and run it.

To let you know, I was browsing thru the Free programs section and happened to stumble across a neat little program called Disk Space Fan. The name just stuck out.

Disk Space Fan - Download disk space management software

I wasn't sure if it was what I was looking for, but it is perfect. Very minimalist, but effective. It immediately recognized the unaccounted space and I was able to delete the $Recycle.bin file.

Thanks for your help though, I appreciate it.

Glad to have a little bit of space now, running out quick.
