Until you get your XP programs all running in Win7, You can run XP virtually from within Win7, or Dual Boot it:

I have been able to get many older advanced graphics and video editing programs to work in Win7 through patient experimentation with Compatibility Mode and research on their latest software. Compatibility Mode

I have had this problem since Windows 7 was installed on a new hard drive; I just installed the 3 party programs this week. As far as the dual boot goes that is what I did, I put the HDD with XP in my computer and I am dual booting. Some day when I get ambitious I am going to format the drive and do a fresh Windows 7 install. Download the Updates and take it one step at a time and see what happens.
I did find out when I try to install a program I first get a message that goes by so fast I cannot read it, after trying to hit OK as much as up to 10 times the program will install and seems to run OK. When I am not fast enough to hit OK on that first message is when I get “The Extended Attributes are Inconsistent” message. That first message must be about 1/10 on a second.

If the problem started after reinstalling to a new HD and the rest of the hardware is the same, then you may have a HD or OS problem.

These two possibilities were covered in the first two replies to your post by Keiichi and Pebbly who suggested running System File Checker to check the System Files and Disk Check to test the HD.

You replied to neither as to whether you ran these tests and what were the results.

In addition, if SFC shows no violations of System Integrity I would consider a Repair Install, and after chkdsk I would run the HD maker's diag/repair full CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

In addition study the logs at Event Viewer>Custom views>Admin to google repeat errors to resolution. Next the Performance log on Advanced Tools accessed by clicking your WEI score link at Computer>Properties. Look for cued issues on Tools page, Generate A System Health Report.

Type "solutions" in Start Search box to see if any have been sent for problems reported or not. Win7 is interactive in this way.

After you have exhausted these troubleshootings steps you are left with clean reinstall after wiping the HD of possibly infected or corrupt code. Some tips for getting a perfect install, based on hundreds done here: re-install windows 7

I did run Disk Check and also ran the manufactures Hard Drive Diagnostics and all checked out OK. I also tried using add and remove programs and removed eight programs with no results. I do plan on re-installing Windows 7; I will use Wipe Drive to clean up then format. In the mean time I put the hard drive with Windows XP back in and can dual boot. I might do the re-install within the next week or two and after I get Microsoft’s updates installed I plan on going slow, installing one program every few days and see what if any of them caused the problem. If I can figure this out I will post the results. I actually had trouble since day one, I could never get WIN 7 to remember my passwords for Outlook, and I tried all the fixes on Microsoft’s web site that I thought would work. I gave up on that and decided to use hot mail, now the rest of my mail goes into hot mail and that works fine for what I need.
