    accidentally changed the file type on the boot partition


    I was messing around with the partition editor in Fedora 14 and accidentally changed the file type on the boot partition. When I go through the startup repair and do the command prompt method, when I enter bcdedit I get the message "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified."
    When I do bootrec.exe /fixboot it give me this. "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded an that the volume is not corrupted" /fixmbr says that it completes successfully btw.
    Any ideas?

    What did you change the file type to? You may be able to reverse it using the best Win7 tool, free Partition Wizard bootable CD. http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html

    All commands for repair are automated in Win7 Startup Repair. Only if no OS shows to repair do you need to sometimes goose it with bootrec, since bootrec is automated once Repair runs. Startup Repair

    The "Wizard" may work magic.
    But a disk descrciption from PW would help. If you have the 100MB system reserved partition the error messages are consistent with a file system change to that partition. Bootrec /fixmbr doesn't touch that partition it fixes the MBR at the front of the disk which is probably why it worked ok.
    bootrec /rebuildbcd and
    bootrec /fixboot
    both work directly on that partition.

    looks like you didn't try bootrec /rebuildbcd
    the startup repair x 3 formula gregrocker refers to may fix it.
