if you can, try to install using the cd. Grab an external cd drive and use that.

He used an illegal upgrade key making your OS illegal too
If your laptop has a recovery partition use it to restore the OS to default state

Calm down, the feds are not after you. Lets do an experiment if you're upto it. Anytime upgrade would have created a restore point, so run system restore to revert to that point. I think you'd be easily able to make out that point in the SR options. If that runs successfully and you find Starter restored, you can enter the COA key on the back of your computer and activate.

OTOH, if you're not upto it, just insert your recovery disks (hopefully you made them) and restore to factory default. If you didnt make them, there are other options, let us know.

    To explain further,

Feds is Federal Bureau of Investigation aka FBI
    SR is System Restore
    COA is Certificate Of Authenticity
OTOH is On The Other Hand

Not to take away from the gravity of the OP's situation....but I've noticed the only acronyms that self-expand are win7 and AFAIK. IIRC doesnt expand, neither does OTOH, neither do some less charitable ones. Somebody needs to do an analysis...
