What sort of files do you have on your system? It sounds like you may have a large number of small files.

1,000 files of 1K each take up a lot more room than a 1 mb file, even though they both would be listed as 1MB of file size.

Your not using Bitlocker by any chance are you? While encrypting, Bitlocker will make the drive look really full even when tis not

Run WinDirStat WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics It'll show you which files are hogging your C Drive

    thanks Ken,

    baraka607:

    Are you using Hibernation?
If not, that can be huge.
Check the root directory of you system drive for a file called hiberfil.sys
There are ways to disable Hibernation and get rid of that file if you want.
Here's what you'll have to do:

    Step 1.

    • Go to Start menu, type 'power', choose Change Power-Saving Settings
    • In the window that opens, choose Change Plan Settings
    • In the window that opens, choose Change Advanced Power Settings
    • In the window that opens, find the Hibernate option in the list and disable it
    • Be certain to click the APPLY button.
    • 'OK' your way out of all these windows

    Step 2.

    • Go to Start menu, type 'cmd' to open up a command prompt
    • Type 'powercfg.exe -h off' (no quotes and make sure you are Administrator (you'll see it in the Title Bar of the command window))
    • Hit <ENTER>
    • Type 'exit'
    • Hit <ENTER>

Re-boot your computer and check that hiberfil.sys is no longer taking up a large chunk of drive space.

It's unusual to have that much space taken, that isn't Windows stuff and not anything you know of. Try using one of the system cleaners mentioned above. Or really dig deep and check file sizes.
