It won't run correctly, most apps will lag a lot and the system will be unresponsive

It'll run slow. The absolute minimum recommended memory for win7 is 1 gb. Right now, on the machine I'm typing on, i have hardly any apps open and about 1.25 gb ram is being consumed. If you plan to run memory intensive apps or a lot of apps at the same time, invest in more ram or a better rig.

It runs OK, especially the 32bit version. It is not as fast as it can be, but it runs faster than e.g. Vista. 2GB of RAM is recommended. At todays prices of RAM sticks (cheap), I would upgrade. Scan your system from this website and you know what your options are. Installing RAM sticks on a laptop is really very easy.

I have observed that the RAM usage is a function of the available RAM. In a 1GB system, the usage would be in the 600 to 700MBs. But then, of course, you get more paging activity which slows the system down.

It will run well enough to use for the basics, like web-browsing and e-mail. It won't leave much headroom for anything else, like gaming, photo-editing, etc.

Since it's the minimum requirement, expect minimal performance.

Seeing as my netbook is just that, all it does is browse the web, watch a few youtube videos (480 is the max), answer emails and IMs... 1 GB is more then enough. What really is slowing down the netbook is not the RAM but the processor. And who would do gaming (other then super simple games, of course) on a netbook?
