maximum password attempts

I have a laptop with windows 7 premium 64bit. I was wondering if there was a default maximum logon attempts when installed. I have been trying to enter my password (or so I thought) and I cannot log on. Also is it also possible that this is a virus because I don't remember changing my password.

Have you tried logging on with just your username (no password)? On machines where the password is expired, this has brought up the reset pw dialog.
