I don't remember DOS that well, but I always change to the drive and then choose the directory in 2 separate commands.

    If I'm at

C:\windows and want to get to d:\music

    I would

    d:

    cd music

    for instance.

    Correct
When cd'ing a path on a different drive, you'll then need to get into that drive in a separate command.
    cd D:\XXX
    D:
    or
    D:
    cd XXX
    will both work.

If you want to change the drive in the same command you'd need to use the SWITCH /D

    cd/d F:\Movies

    -DG
