Revisit: Send to Compressed Folder (ZIP)

I've tried this process every possible way there is to try. I've had this issue persistently with 2 user machines for weeks, this process does not work. (for me)

Other Threads-both SevenForums & Elsewhere-recommend just using 7zip, winrar, etc... These however are not a solution to the actually problem, just avoidance. Also, I don't have the luxury of installing 3rd party programs, or any other programs for that matter.

SFC /Scannow reports no errors.

The Summary:

I had the SendTo Compressed Folder disapear on another users machine. After spending a few minutes, I decided to go learn more about the shell, and associations on my own PC. Conveniently enough, I ended up removing my own Send To Compressed Folder option. Hence making the situation alittle more urgent.

The operating systems affected: Windows 7 Pro x64 | Windows 7 Pro x86

My machine-being the x86-is the one I've tried multiple fixes/solutions.
When I login to the domain, my Profile does not have the Send To Compressed folder option. -HOWEVER- When I login as the local administrator account the send to compressed folder is there! When trying to compress a folder it says access is denied, but thats besides the point I think, I can mess with permissions later. (maybe this is a clue, I'm not sure)

The attached imagine is a few screenshots of comparisons. RED My user profile, GREEN Local Administrator, GREY is netural to both profiles.

1) Registry for .zip folders on both users are identical. Maybe there is another place in the registry that pertain to this option?

2) Why would the Local Admin Association have .zfsendtotarget assigned to an Unknown application, but yet respond as if Compressed Folders works? Whereas my profile says the associated application is Compressed (zipped) Folders.

3) I have tried unloading the .dll, as via descriptions for XP/VISTA/7 on multiple websites, this method errors with some "RegisterSendTo," if this method is familiar to you-how did you manage to unload the .dll, then what?

NOTES:
- I did not-or highly doubt I-installed any programs related to Compressing Files/Folders, that could conflict.
- Domain doesn't have roaming profiles so settings should/would be in my own user folders, and not use the default users profile.
-The properties of both shell:sendto -for compressed files on both user profiles are Virtually Identical. I've even tried moving them around. Doesn't fix-or-break one another.

Hello Tchafey,

See if downloading and merging the ZIP option in the tutorial below may be able to help. It restores all default associations for ZIP and Compressed Folders.

Brink, thanks for the prompt response.

I ran the ZIP file associated registry restore, and re-logged. No luck, as such as I expected. In my file associations the results remain the same. (picture)

For anyone that doesn't use a 3rd party app for compressed folders, what's you file associations for .ZFSENDTOTARGET say? (By comparasion to my picture)

Mine shows a different default for .zfsendtotarget. Try the REG file below to restore the defaults for this to see if it may help.

Works wonders! Cannot believe this issue is resolved, well ALMOST...

When I right and send to, 2 things happen:

1) The name isn't "Compress (zipped) Folders," it's "Compress (zipped) Folders.ZFSENDTOTARGET" (picture).
This is hardly a concern of mines, I'm just thankful that the option is back in the shell, but Curious as to how to change it.

2) NEW PROBLEM(Well same problem as I had on the Local Admin Account), I cannot send a folder with contents to a compressed folder, because it says I do not have permission. (picture) How would I change the permissions related to SendToCompressedFolders?

My user account:
Administrator, Power User, AD Administrator/Power User, vitually no restrictions.

Notes:
- I can however create a new Compressed Folder, yet in order to move files to it, I must change the security/permissions and add myself to the properties of the folder, then I can move contents into it. This setting DOES NOT stick with all compressed folders, I have to repeat this step everytime.

After doing some Research, and messing with things on my system, I've found out that the sendTo option works in other locations, just not the desktop, if I right-Click desktop properties it says I have full permission.

Wasn't sure if I should edit, or double-post. So I edited.

Tchafey,

As a test, create a new administrator account to see how it works while logged on to it, and if it may be some issue with your other account.

I tried this method before you finally fixed my SendTo option. But i decided to go ahead and create a new admin account again. GREEN denotes the new local administrator account.

No luck with this method either, I tried send to compressed folder both on Desktop and My Documents.

I have 2 computers with this same exact issue and it's mighty frustrating. No matter what permissons you set, the error seems to exsist.

NOTE:
- I can access the other computers C drive from my computer and compress folders, but if your at the workstation itself, access is denied. This begs the uppercase question...WHY WOULD YOU LET A RDP COMPRESS SOMETHING WHEN AT THE COMPUTER YOU CAN'T?

EDIT: I had SYSTEM Hightlighted instead of admin for FOLDER I WANT TO ZIP PROPERTIES, I just checked, the settings are the same for the new local admin account.

Well, I'm happy yo hear that the Send To option is fixed now.

Not sure about the RDP issue, but you may need to set both sharing and permissions to allow access.
