However, I see all too often wherein a new poster is put on the defensive. We all have a larger responsibility in this area - especially us "Gurus."

Again, my very humble, observational opinion.

You make some good points, but, if you look at message #5 and message #7, I think you will see that the OP wasn't really interested in help as he was in putting down forum members.

Right or wrong, attitudes are usually met with like attitudes.

I think any one of us could have drove over to his house in person and showed him exactly how to do everything he wanted and he would still find something to complain about. Some people would just rather throw insults than accept advice.

mike, you certainly have a valid point. But we all can sense whether someone is coming here for help or just ranting. He started already in his first sentence with:
How are we supposed to know why Microsoft does things the way they do. I think he was not asking for a solution, but for an argument. Several people gave him good guidance on how things work in Windows 7, but instead he gave an "education lesson" on XP. I don't think we treated him unfairly. He asked for it.

Fair enough, Wolfgang and all the others justifying their responses. My apologies.

Certainly, many gave concise responses but the tone can sometimes catalyze the disintegration of productive discussions.

I guess I'm a bit too sensitive regarding such, admittedly so. I do respect all of you very highly and I am honored to be a part of these Forums.

Good point. Though I didn't like the guy's tone I could see why he got defensive. But to be honest his tone put people in attck mode, whether intentional or not.

Anyway you make a valid point, and one we need to remember.

Something we could all learn from (myself included), except I believe it was he who was put on the defensive. Remember, he's a 'guest' in our 'house'. Me? I have a problem with 'Gurus' who jump on new (& regular) posters, as though, somehow, their sensibilities have been offended. It is, after all, why we're here...to help those who don't understand.

I have been very vocal about this issue, much to the irritation of some. So much so that perhaps I risk becoming to those gurus what they are to the newbies that rant or ask that "irritating" question (or questions that press the buttons of some). How disconcerting is that ?

Many here set an example of responding respectfully no matter what the circumstances. I aspire to such behaviour, lest I become that which I protest against. As should we all.

James I completely agree with your point and will say that I have reported posts where "senior" members were bashing guests. And I'm sure some of mine have been reported as well. However "guests/new members" need understand that their tone also affects the response they receive.

Yes the senior members should know better, but the guests can't just come in your house and start giving attitude.

I'm not saying we didn't have dirty hands too, but his second post didn't exactly convey a warm hello to the forum members either....
