    Win 7 Recent RC download

Here's a question for you more knowledgeable folks than I:

Got my TechEd letter today and in it talked about a new gadget for TechEd news, so being human I jumped on it, but while downloading the gadget I came across some news on Se7en, it asked me if I wanted to download the new RC. Well, a course I am all ready running the new RC 7100, but what the h... why not see what they have to offer. So I said yes, and this is what I got for a download:

    7100.01.1700_x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1cuxfrer_en_dvd.iso

Most of that is pretty easly to figure out, albeit the "retail" through me off. Couldn't figure what that means.

When I went to copy the text for this thread this is what came up instead of the above:

    7229.0.090604-1901_x64fre_client_en-us_OEM_Ultimate-GRMCULXFREO_EN_DVD.iso

Anyway may be someone can educate me (little hard sometimes; just ask my college Profs).

You really have to ask yourself just where you were downloading from? When going directly to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../download.aspx there won't be "any questions" as to what you are downloading there! 7 RCs!

Evidently the download link for 7 was directed elsewhere by whoever edited the TechEd letter to start with. The retail was seen on the betas as well since the downloads are the full retail Ultimate edition not simply any upgrade or lesser edtition for testing purposes. There's nothing odd about seeing that on the various builds.

As I stated in my thread I was on the "MS DOWNLOAD SITE". I have just finished running the setup and in the "View Basic Information about your comuter" Is the following:

    Windows edition:

    Windows 7 Ultimate

Copyright 2009 Corporation. All rights reserved.

Now I cannot remember if the original RC stated that it was 7100 RC. I am at present looking into that situation.

Again this was "DOWNLOADED FROM MS'S DOWNLOAD SITE", this was not downloaded from a torrent site or any other site.

Thank for any information you can give me.

When signed in at Technet you would arrive at the RC download page where you select either the 32 or 64bit option seen there. Windows 7 Release Candidate

    Hi Lee,

I don't think it ever gave the build number in the System window you are looking at.

It will be on the bottom right of your desktop, though.

LOL. Yup Yup - can always rely on you to add a touch of much needed levity ( from Noel Coward's Hay Fever )

Short and sweet, There was only TWO (2) versions offered either Officially from MS or "LEAKED". Most were named "RETAIL" the rest were named OEM. There was only 1 (leak) that I remember of Home Professional, all the rest were Ultimate.

Retail is what you would buy at Walmart . OEM is what you buy whenyou buy your computer from BestBuy.

Beta testers have access to the Home Premium not Home Pro builds. Also the newer builds since were able to be unlocked. Ultimate is the only one you can activate.

They are list retail with everything following the 7000 builds being designated as evaluation copies no longer seeing the "for testing purposes only" as part of the watermark. Oem isn't sold separately at BestBuy or Target but places like newegg, TigerDirect, and other online vendors fo rsystem builders. Only retail cartons are sold at retail outlets across the board.
