Windows 7 - USB Icon not showing up

My usb icon does not show. Its not a big deal but it really annoys me when things dont work the way they are supposed to especially when they used to. This happened about a month ago. I turned on my laptop and bam, all of a sudden icons arent showing up and looking through forums i have fixed all but one. When i plug in any mass storage device (usb; flash drive, external hard drive, mp3 player) the icon shows a general icon as if the icon was missing. I have attatched a picture so you can see exactly what I am talking about. If anyone knows how to fix this it would be GREATLY appreciated.

hi Alex, and welcome to sevenforums,

If one or more of your icons are not displaying correctly, or that your icon cache is corrupted, then you might consider rebuilding the icon cache to reset and reload the icon images into the icon cache.
try this - and let us know if it worked.

you may have to reboot after doing it.

Thank you for the help. I thought it might have been a problem with the icon cache but i just rebuilt using your link and my problem still remains. I have rebooted my computer and also removed and re inserted my usb flash drive

Hello Alex, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Check in the root directory of the devices that do not have a icon, and look for a hidden (not always hidden though) autorun.inf file. If there is one, then delete it. You may need to disconnect and reconnect the device to see if the icon appears afterwards.

If there isn't one, then you could manually change the icon for the plugged in device using either option in the tutorial below to have one afterwards.

    Drive Icon - Change

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Good to have you aboard, but don't just come around when problems crop up. Visit regularly and you can prevent a lot of problems by reading solutions from the outstanding contributors here. They got me through Vista and now Seven. A great informative group of members here.
