Laptop doesn't sleep when lid is closed

I have a Dell Studio running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and the laptop doesn't sleep when I close the lid, except I double-checked my settings in the control panel and it's supposed to sleep.

I've had the computer for over 6 months now and the problem first started yesterday, right after I installed the latest Windows updates. When I close the lid, the computer doesn't sleep, but even when I open the lid, nothing appears on the monitor. It's still black and unresponsive, although the power button isn't blinking, so I know it's still awake.

Hello ieatlikeawolf, Welcome to the Forum.

Could you answer a few questions?
  • Does the laptop go into sleep mode if you choose Sleep from the start menu?
  • Have you tried doing a System Restore to a point before you installed the updates?
  • Did you install Update KB976902 at the same time as other updates?

When I put it into sleep mode, the monitor turns off, but my fan stays on and everything is still running, except the computer becomes unresponsive.

I haven't tried a System Restore yet.

How do I check which updates I installed?

OK. So you have a "will not sleep" issue. The lid is just a related issue.

Let's assume that the updates caused the problem. You want to restore the computer to a point before the updates were installed.

Go to Start > Computer > System Properties (top bar) > System Protection (left side) > System Restore and choose a restore point that is before the date the Updates were installed.

Update KB976902 is supposed to be installed alone, not with other updates. Can you tell from the dates of the updates that this is what happened?

Yeah, the install was paired with some other updates. I'll try the system restore now.

Hi, I tried the system restore several times. Each time it said system restore couldn't operate because it couldn't access a file, likely because of an anti-virus. So I disabled my COMODO firewall, my Avira Antivirus, and my Spyware Terminator, but it still wouldn't work.

Okay, so I temporarily uninstalled my Avira, did system restore, and I am pretty sure my computer is now able to go to sleep normally. Thanks so much for the help!

Hey, glad to hear it.

Strange about Avira. An AV should not interfere like that. I'm wondering if it may have had something to do with the bad Updates install.
