Just two small questions

I'm curious at what one odd quirk means : sometimes, the mouse freezes for a few seconds while a double beep sounds through the headphones, the second lower in tone than the first. It doesn't happen a lot, once every few hours or so, but I'm wondering whether there is a way to make it stop since it doesn't seem to serve any purpose.

The other question is whether it is possible to run a previous version of Movie Maker on Windows 7 (the MM included with Windows 7 lacks a real timeline).

Does anyone have information on these?

  1. Fascinating question. I’m just tossing out ideas here: What are you doing when it happens? Are you always doing the same thing? Does it happen regularly? Next time you hear it, note the time. Does it happen at about the same time? The mouse slowing definitely sounds as though some kind of process is being started. What’s running in the background?
  2. Not as far as I know. Unfortunately you get what you pay for. If you really need some editing capability, I'd look at Ulead or better yet Premiere Pro. I think there’s also a basic version of Premiere available as well. How complicated are your editing tasks?

1. Sometimes I'm browsing online, other times working with my paint program. It happens maybe two, three times in half a day. The mouse doesn't just slow, it is stuck entirely. I'm not sure what runs in the background when it happens.
Okay, I'll start noting times.

2. I need to be able to see at least seconds on the timeline, but preferably smaller.

Windows Movie Maker 2.6 works on Windows 7. At least it does on mine.

Beep tones are emitted by the motherboard in various patterns to warn of hardware problems.

Google your mobo model + beep tones or go to it's Support Downloads webpage to read the Manual to interpret the beep tone pattern.

Here are the universal codes which may slightly vary for your mobo model: Beep Codes | PCMech

Two short beeps normally means RAM problems so I'd reseat RAM and test with memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes or overnight to really stress it: RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Open Sounds in Control Panel then click on the Sounds tab.

Select each Program event listed that has an associated sound and click on Test. See if any match the sound you hear. That may help you figure out what is happening.

FOr instance, Device disconnect has two tones, the 2nd lower than the first.

Thank you, that's the sound I'm hearing. Device connect and disconnect both have it, how can I find out which device is causing it?

Look in the bottom right system tray when the sound occurs to see if any hardware is being installed, click on installer icon to see what it is.

Check your logs for any repeat errors: Computer lags every couple seconds
