I wonder whether 7 will be like Vista. Vista could be installed as a demo, and the upgrade could be installed from that. In other words, an upgrade license could be used like a full version, at the cost of installing the OS twice. (This violates the license agreement.)

As regards the upgrade options, a preliminary matrix is available:

Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Test Matrix

For example: Vista Home Premium can be upgraded to 7 Home Premium, but not Professional. It can be upgraded to 7 Ultimate, though.

I think you can use the upgrade to do a clean install. I don't see any issues just from my readings so far with trying to do this. This is from the FAQ

I am running Windows XP, can I upgrade to Windows 7?

Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. A customer with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade media but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.

All RCs will need to do a clean install to the retail version.

The upgrade option is only if you have original Vista installed. BTW, you can do a clean install from the Upgrade Version.

Hello, What that is saying is you may not install from within xp. However you can buy and use the upgrade disk , get a clean install for the lesser price. Lots of ways to go on this. Consider dual booting if you have the space. Or clean install but do not format and then win 7 puts your xp files in a file called windows old and this will be on your c drive, there is a trick to accessing them. Do a clean install after you make back up files of your stuff. Lots of ways to go and most all of them are covered in the Seven Forums Tutorials. Good luck and enjoy the 7. lm

So why is there a full version and an upgrade version. If in fact the upgrade disk will do a clean install.

The full version you can do a clean install directly. The upgrade version needs to do an in-place upgrade, or if clean installing, there needs to be a qualifying install (xp or vista) already on the hdd. One way round that is to install twice; once with no key, then dvd boot again, with the upgrade key, using the first temp install to qualify the second clean install.

Technically of course, you need an existing copy of vista or xp installed to qualify for using the upgrade install.

The upgrade part is not true. You need a previous XP or Vista key, then you can do a full clean install.

So basically, if your computer came with a vista or xp disk, then the upgrade would really be the way to go. That way, you could do a clean install over top of the existing previous os, and if you ever wanted to do another clean install, you could simply use your vista or xp disk to reinstall that version of windows, then use the win7 upgrade disk to clean install win7. It would be a little more work, but you only pay half the price as opposed to a full disk being twice as much as an upgrade disk
