    Windows Fax & Scan

I've run searches from every platform that I can think of, and I just can't find any information on Win Fax & Scan in Windows 7. I'm running the Windows 7 Ultimate RC build 7229, and, like Vista, Fax & scan is available.

Has Fax & Scan been added to all Win 7 versions by Microsoft, or is it still offered in only one edition?

Hi jmp0889, welcome to the forums.

Only time will tell as the only version of 7 available at the minute is 'Ultimate'. I can't see why it would not be added though as it looks to be a very handy tool.

I can tell you that it is in build 7100 "Starter" edition as I have installed and evaluated it.

    I miss WinFax

When I upgraded from XP to Vista I upgraded to Ultimate because I wanted Fax and Scan as WinFax no longer worked in XP.

I was really surprised to find out that you could not print directly from Word into Fax and Scan as you could do with WinFax.

I have just upgraded ffrom Vista Ultimate to Windows Seven. I was hoping that Fax and Scan had been upgraded. It wasn't

Would be nice if Fax and Scan would accept a Word document eiter directly from word or as afile clicked on and Sent to Fax and Scan.

After all of these windows upgrades WinFax of years ago still has Fax and Scan beat

Not to flog a dead horse here, but yes, the embedded scan program is pathetic. Adobe integrates into MS Office but not the scanner.

I checked for scanner compatibility before going to Win7 x64 Ultimate, and sure enough the driver is available. Windows even found it and installed it for me. Nice, I thought ... But the HP scan utility will NOT install, and M$ will not scan to .pdf, so it almost worthless for documents since a (huge) jpeg is the smallest format available.

Sure wish there was a work-around.

A great program that works with most scanners is Vuescan. Might want to check out their free trial version. It supports most scanners, even very old ones.

I tried Vuescan and it did find and operate my HP 7400C seamlessly out of the box. Output quality however was unimpressive compared to Win7's fax and scan and the original HP software. For $40 I'm more inclined to keep looking.

Does anyone know if any other HP software would work, given there is a driver for the hardware?

I've been trying to find out if there are any improvements to the Windows 7 version of Fax and Scan. I agree wholeheartedly with RogerR, it is so crippled and pathetic in Vista. It is looking like the answer is no, no improvements? Meaning I guess it is just the same deliberately idiotic step by merciless step program that it is in Vista. That alone would have been worth the upgrade to Windows 7, now I can't think of a single reason.

    Windows Fax and Scan

I have an external fax modem that I bought from Dell with the Computer that I bought 2 weeks ago.

Each time I try to send a fax it says that the media is write protected. I need to be able to send faxes and receive faxes. does anyone know how I can fix this?
