    Personal Folder

So, I'm having no luck finding anybody trying to do what I'm aiming to, so I'll throw it up here, and see if anyone has a suggestion.

I'm running W7 Pro x64, and want to set it so that when I click on my name (the personal folder link), it redirects me to the my documents I'd used under XP, which are stored on a file server. Anyone does this, or know how?

Everything I find on the topic talks about right clicking on documents and setting the path, but right clicking just lets me add things to my library (which my machine won't let me add, since I don't have search 4.0 installed on the file server).

hi WebMattR, and welcome to sevenforums,

    try this:

User Folders - Change Default Location

click on user name in start-menu

    right-click on documents >> properties >> location >> move

let us know if that worked. :)

When I right click on documents, location isn't there, and move isn't an option.

I suppose I should note, I am a member of a domain (though my account is a domain admin, and I'm a local administrator on this machine), but I don't think that the domain effects the documents locations (since it created a completely new and seperate profile from my XP one).

I did. It brings up a window called "Document Properties" with a single tab: Library

    ah - i think i see what you've done. :)

left-click on your user name right at the top of the startmenu.

then an explorer window will open up.

now right-click on documents in the right-hand pane.

    that should do it.

I don't have "documents" but I do have "My Documents."* Right clicking on that and bringing up the properties gives me the following tabs: General, Sharing, Security, Previous Versions, Customize. Still no location.

    * Sorry for sounding stupid, but I'm trying to be as precise in describing this as I can, just for the sake of keeping it simple for anyone trying to help me.

i'm a bit baffled - all mine have a location tab

    let's try a different approach.

type shell:UsersFilesFolder (don't worry about capitalisation) into your start-menu searchbox.

this will bring up the same explorer window as if you clicked on user name in start-menu.

i've already changed my 'my documents' to a root of my 'sammy' partition, so mine doesn't say 'my documents' any more.

anyway, if i right-click it (or any of the other icons in the right-pane), then click on properties right at the bottom, i have a location tab (forget all the other tabs - it's because it's the root of a partition) - then i can move the location away from f: to anywhere else.

Try going to C:\Users\(your user name)\ and right click the folder.
