    "Open With" problem

I was using the "Open With" function to open attachments in my email and now every Icon, program, and .exe file opens as the program I select with "Open With." My quick launch bars, task bar, desktop, and everything is changed to the program's icon.

I tried to system restore, but when I go in and click on the system restore it just opens the program I used "Open With" for. I tried to Open With system restore, but have no idea where to find the .exe to do this. And I'm not even sure if this would solve the problem.

My question is, everything says change the .reg, but I've download the file and merged it and it didn't fix it. So, is there anyway to over come the Open With problem with a simple fix or is the only to do wipe my OS and restart completely (which I do not have time for as a college student). I'm really fed up with wiping my harddrive to fix all windows mishaps.

There is pretty much nothing on this subject through google and the information on the forum about it is vague, but I've seen a couple people with the same problem and have no idea if or how they've fixed it.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

First thing I would try is a simple secure file check. It may not solve the problem, but it can't hurt anything either.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If you problem interferes with that method, you can use this one.
SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

Hello Kevin, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, you might see if downloading and merging the exe and lnk (LNK) options in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default associations for these file extensions.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

    Hope this helps,

I was able to find the system restore in the system32 files called rstui.exe or something and was able to run from there. And this fixed the settings that were bugged out.

    I appreciate you help though.

I don't know why I didn't consider command line restore for this situation.
That was the proper course of action. Glad you have it resolved.
