Corrupt new user accounts

Greetings all,

First post here. I'm having problems with creating new user accounts, admin or otherwise. Login works fine, but icons are all generic and windows explorer turns up the "page failed to load" error. In contrast, my regular admin acct works perfectly. I noticed this after a hard shutdown but am unsure there is a connection. I performed a system restore from an earlier restore point from before the unsafe shutdown but no luck. Any ideas?

I found several references for corrupt new accounts, most received errors during the creation process, and were unable to create the account. Others seem to address accounts that did at one time work fine, and pointed back to the same MSKB for corrupt user profiles. None seem to fit your problem of the new accounts getting created but are unusable. So I don't know the answer to your problems so I'm just going to ask more questions to maybe jog something in someone's head.
What's this history of this computer?
Has it been working fine?
Are there other accounts and do they work?
Can you do everything you want to do with your regular Admin account?
Is this the system listed in your system specs?
Is your system current and secure? With what?
Have you scanned for malware?
I also found a suggestion to take down the security while creating the new account. I've never had to take down my security, and don't recommend it if not necessary. However, in that event, I recommend as a security precaution you disconnect your network from the Internet. Either pull the cable between router and modem, or pull the modem's ISP connection. Then Windows will still be able to setup your network access without exposing your computer to badguys on the Internet. Once account is set (and hopefully working properly) reconnect your Internet access.

History

Dear team,

Thanks for the reply. The computers history is a short one, and yes, it is the model listed in the system specs. it recently underwent a mobo replacement following a bad bios flash, although I suspect this is unrelated to the issue at hand. Computer worked flawlessly prior to, and following the mobo replacement, just before this issue arose. I'm beginning to think that the hard shutdown may really be the culprit here. I have done a full system scan with both malwarebytes and mse, both of which turned up no leads. I have no other accounts besides the generic guest acct, which is off. It was just upon trying to create an additional acct that I noticed this problem. In my last post I mentioned that my regular admin acct was working perfectly, but I think I may have been premature in that analysis. Since, I have been getting c++ runtime errors associated with firefox and the divx web player. Internet explorer is also acting up (no specific error codes but making strange noises?!?) I have read about Uac settings possibly interfering with the creation of new user accts, so I'll try creating one under reduced settings and post my results. Also, just a little extra information...I have run chkdsk on both partitions (c,d) and the results turned up no bad sectors. Also I ran the windows memory diag, which again yielded nothing of consequence. Is system restore my best option?

You said you already tried System Restore.

Was this an identical motherboard to the old? Did you do a fresh Windows install? Or just swap motherboards?

System restore

Ur right, sorry. I did a system restore from a restore point created by the system (daily restore point following critical updates), but I was thinking maybe a more thorough method might be necessary. Also, I didn't do a fresh system install following the motherboard replacement cuz I hadn't backed up my data properly before the bad bios flash. I know...shame on me Also, I believe the mobo is the same....bios version is different tho.

If the motherboard is not exactly the same, it is likely it has different integrated hardware, meaning it needs different drivers installed. Often, a fresh Windows repair, or fresh install is best when replacing boards.

Restore

Ok. So does that mean I need an install disc? When the computer was new, I created a system backup using the manufacturers utility that would do a complete restore. Also I've created a system image using the windows utility. Which one do u recommend? I believe the drivers that would be installed with the manufacturers restore discs would be for the old motherboard no?

To be truthful, I don't know the best solution and I don't see where the wrong drivers would affect creating new users. Any errors in Device Manager?

You might try a repair install. See Repair Install.
