Massive Problem Intalling OTF Fonts - Driving Me Crazy!

    Hi guys,

Hopefully someone here will help me solve a font problem I am having - it has been driving me crazy for months and I literally can't find anything online which helps solve it.

I am trying to install the font Gotham Book to use with Photoshop. The following steps are followed everytime:

    1. I go to the folder on my desktop containing the OTF Font.
    2. I either click on the font and select that install option, or I drag it to the fonts folder. I have full administrative rights.
    3. It tells me they are already installed (even though they are nowhere to be seen)
    4. I select overwrite
    5. The fonts are still nowhere to be seen.

The font files are fine, I have installed them on my laptop and also on my mac, never had a problem with them!

Can anyone offer any advice/help? I need to edit a PSD containing that font and it is driving me crazy

    Thanks,
    Dave

Hi Dave and welcome to the Forum
Can you see any other OTF fonts on your system? If you have Gotham Book on another Window machine can you use it in Photoshop? Is the PSD file one that you created? If not and the layers have been merged you wont be able to edit the font and I don't think you can "Unmerge" them

Hi Mitchell - thanks for your reply and your warm welcome to the forum!

    In answer to your questions:

    1. Yes I have it installed on my Windows 7 laptop and it works fine in Photoshop.
    2. The PSD is not merged.

The problem is that they won't even install - they say they are installed (when I try to re-install) but they do not appear in the Fonts folder and they also do not appear in any applications - Word, Photoshop etc.

Any help would be really appreciated - I can attach the fonts if you think that would be easier.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,

If you open up Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Fonts are they infact showing up as a hidden font?

You can select any font from here and hide/unhide them

    Hi OS,

Nope, none of the fonts are hidden.

I have checked by going into detail view and sorting by show/hide - there is nothing that says 'hide'. That is assuming they are not actually hidden well I can't find them!

    Thanks,
    Dave

Just a stab in the dark, here. With the Fonts window open, in the top right corner of yourwinow type "gotham" in the search box and click Enter. Just a thought!
if that brings no result I think we will have to consider that either the Font file itself has ben corrupted or the Fonts Folder on your PC has a problem.
I can't find a free copy of Gotham Book to try and if you have purchased these fonts I don't think you should put them up on the Forum for anyone to copy.
I suppose the next step is to run sfc /sannow to check out you system files for you you!

Nothing there after trying that Mitchell - it is extremely frustrating

They worked on my other Windows 7 Laptop and my Mac which is extremely wierd!

SFC/Sannow? Excuse the newbie question - but what do these do?

    Thanks again!

    Hi Dave
Try this. Rename the file of the font you aare trying to install viz, if it is named Gotham Book.otf then rename to Gotham BookX.otf and see if you can install that. Also when you open the psd file in Photoshop can you see the text you want to edit and is it showing Gotham Book correctly? If it is and your layers are definitely not merged then you must have the font installed otherwise it wouldn't display correctly.
    Now to sfc /scannow
This will scan allyour systemfiles and hopeully corret any errors. You may have to run it to o three times to get all errors corrected.
    Here's how to run it:
Click the Start Button and on the search box type cmd this will open a small window at the top will be cmd.exe. RIGHT click on that and choose "Run as Administrator". You might get a window asking "Do you want this program etc.. Click YES This will open a command window. At the blinking curser type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. Note there is a space between the c and the /. Then press Enter. The scan may take some time so just let it run, don't interrupt it by trying to do anything else whilst it is running.

Start - Run - type C:\windows\fonts\your font name

    Click on install.

This won't work from the regular fonts folder in Windows so you have to do it this way from the run command.

I just had a font problem similar and this worked for me.A very nice user here directed me to some fonts I was "missing" but for those that i still did not have, this technique worked for me.

You could probably point the command to the desktop from the run command if the font really isn't in the windows\fonts folder.
