    Laptop vs Desktop

Although I prefer my desktop, obviously there are situations where the laptop is the best or only alternative, e.g., when traveling.

Why do I prefer my desktop? Well, the 24" widescreen is one reason. But there's another reason. With the super fast processors available these days, I find the biggest speed bottleneck to be the hard drive. I have a custom desktop with an i7 processor and a 10,000 rpm velociraptor hard drive. Very, very fast. Laptops and the desktops available "off the shelf" seem to put the slowest (and cheapest) hard drives in their systems. Also, with my custom-built system, I can pick the graphics card with the speed and features I want. With the laptop or "off the shelf" system, I cannot.

Bottom line. The monitor and the speed.

I use both. But I mainly use my laptop. For course work, tv viewing and video files and photoshop and lightroom processing. I have never attempted to try run games on this laptop - that's what my desktop is for (but I don't play games anymore, get bored of them quickly.)

They both have their uses and drawbacks but I like both. :)

And besides since I do baily back ups on an external hard drive, if I know either laptop or pc needs to go in for a service - I can use the other to work on my documents that I need to work on. :) So always good to have a back up around. :)

I have a laptop, but I wish I had a desktop. If something goes wrong with desktop hardware, you can find it, and replace it relatively cheap. With a laptop, this isn't always the case. However, I love the portability of my laptop.

You won't find a discussion because it doesn't warrant a discussion...much like me asking for a thread to discuss what I should have for dinner tonight.

My point being, everyone knows the pros and cons of both devices. You, as the owner and user must decide which fits your needs best. You are the only person that knows those needs and knows what you need a computer to do for you. None of us do, so none of us are qualified to answer.

Going back to my dinner example, no one else knows what I have on hand at home, what I am hungry for, what I'm allergic to, what I dislike, etc...so me and only me can make the decision as to what meal I'll prepare.

While I love the power of a desktop I prefer the conveniance of a laptop. It allows me to go from playing games at a desk to playing games on the couch to watching movies in bed. And so much easier to take to a LAN party.

The only downside these days are their screen res. Why the hell is it so hard to get anything above 1366*768 or 1600*900

That should not be a problem. My Vaio has 1920x1080.
