    Windows 7 Pro

I'm going to pre-order the Pro version for $99 from Amazon -- it's got the XP apps gimmick and seems to hit the sweet spot in features and price between Premium and Utimate

With all this talk about pre-ordering, I'd like to pre-order also. But I'm a bit lost, I bought XP Pro a while back and have it installed. I dual boot XP Pro & Se7en. I have to use a program from XP so I take it I'll have to buy at least a Se7en Pro upgrade, I understand that Se7en Pro Upgrade DVD will do a clean install of Se7en Pro..... My question is will I still be able to use my XP Pro in a dual boot? Or for that matter can I then remove XP from this computer and install it on another computer? Or will that XP be foobared?

Here's my understanding, but someone can correct me if I am wrong. If you use the "upgrade" version of Windows 7, then you are legally converting your Windows XP or Vista license (whichever you have) to "Windows 7". That is why you are getting the discount. You are not paying full price because you are not buying a "separate" license -- you are converting your existing license to the new license.

But don't forget about the new "XP Mode" in Pro and Ultimate....

With Pro, you can run XP Mode to run the XP app you need.

XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3). It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions via a download from the Microsoft web site.

So, while you (probably) cannot legally dual boot your old XP or install in another computer, you would not need to with the Pro XP mode....

If you really need to dual boot XP with Windows 7 -- or need that XP in another computer -- then you need to forgo the "upgrade" license discount and buy a separate FULL license of Windows 7.

Right now, [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DHGM50/ref=s9_simx_gw_s0_p65_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0ZRXTET37DXHNP9YGRYW&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846"]pre-order upgrade license of Windows 7 Pro is $99 (until July 11).[/ame] [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DHLVII/ref=s9_simx_gw_s0_p65_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0ZRXTET37DXHNP9YGRYW&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846"]Full Windows 7 Pro license is $300. [/ame]

    But look at this!

It would be CHEAPER to buy the pre-order upgrade license of Windows 7 Pro for $99 and then if you REALLY need to run XP separately, to then go buy another copy of XP! You can buy a copy [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-System-Builders-VERSION/dp/B000JTFVME/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1246506712&sr=8-5"]of XP from computer shops or Amazon for like $85![/ame]

It's cheaper to buy the upgrade versions of Windows 7 (Premium or Pro) for your old XP -- and then go buy another copy of XP -- than to buy the FULL versions of Windows 7.

Also, my understanding is that anyone could buy an upgrade version and install it on an empty or blank hard drive using the "double install" method (explained in detail elsewhere) without using any previous version of Windows to validate the upgrade. So there actually is no need for anyone to buy the full version, unless you just like to spend money for nothing.

Or if it makes you feel better, you can use Win 7 RC as your previous build to "upgrade" from, simply by following the instructions given by MS on their Engineering Blog on how to upgrade from an RC to the RTM.

Since these install methods are expressly and intentionally provided by MS, I see no problem about using them, but each to their own.

the only way u'l get 7 for free is if u bought vista (or a pc with it pre-installed) on or since 26th june, now since u had vista re-installed that says it was already on there in the first place. in this case the answer to ur ? is no.
